Oct 24, 2017 6:30 AM - 8:00 AM
It's a celebration!Thursday 12 October marks the Anniversary of the Charter of the Rotary Club of Caloundra when Ben Bennett was our Charter President.
The Club honoured Ben Bennett as part of it 50th anniversary celebrations in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of the commencement of Rotary International on 23 February 2005. Where better to do so than at the park named after him? Ben had a strong interest in flora & fauna and lobbied hard for the establishment of Ben Bennett Park.
The club’s project – in conjunction with Caloundra City Council – provided a BBQ picnic shelter, paving, and a sign which pays tribute to Ben Bennett at the entrance to the park on Queen Street, Caloundra.
So to mark our 63rd Anniversary, our breakfast meeting on Tuesday 17 October will be a BBQ at Ben Bennett Park from 6.30am.
a
Landscape Architect, Tim Hindley, Managing Director of Anembo Consultants will be the Guest Speaker, giving some more background on Ben Bennett Park.

The Caloundra Chilli Festival was founded in 2016 for people who love and idolise chilli. Let's celebrate everything chilli in an annual festival Website: http://thechilliaddiction.com.au/ignite-chilli-festival-caloundra-25-november-2017 Deborah Taylor has secured a stand at the Ignite Chilli Festival 25 November 2017 1:00pm - 8:00pm. It will be at no cost to us however from time to time the Chamber would like to borrow a couple of Rotarians to help out here and there. To assist with the Rotary Stand it will be beside Heidi and I who will be selling clothing etc so we can chip in if the Chamber needs some bodies.
Have spoken to Angie at STEPS regarding selling chilli plants, herbs and small trees. Vicki at Red Hot Chilli Pepper said we can sell herbs too and trees as long as we have the chilli and herbs thing trees will be OK too. The trees fit in nicely with our RI Presidents message regarding our environment and planting more trees.
Angie got Lisa (in charge of plant nursery) to ring me. Lisa said there is plenty of time to have some seedlings available and some small trees. Of course I let STEPS know that the proceeds will go to them and that we will promote Rotary and STEPS on the day.
I will organise booking of the portable EFTPOS machine from Bendigo bank next week. I told Lisa that we will be guided by her as to what pricing we should put on the plants. |

Caloundra Smart Centre - 63 Bulcock St, Caloundra
Nov 28, 2017
Council is currently implementing a Smart City Program across the region which looks at ways we might be able to use technology to deliver services more efficiently and effectively. It also includes the plans for the technology for the new Maroochydore City Centre. After one Rotary member from Kawana Waters came through the Smart Centre in Caloundra, they asked that I do a presentation at their next Rotary meeting as they found it so informative and interesting. This made me think that other Rotary clubs may also be interested in a visit and presentation. It is also a great way for me to hear ideas and comments from the community about Council's activity in this space. Our breakfast meeting will be in the Smart Centre learning all about the technologies that have been and are being installed in Caloundra as part of the Smart City Program followed by a Q&A session. As Caloundra is our testing lab for new technologies it has more tech installed currently than any other area of the coast. This visit follows on nicely from Mel Massina's talk about Smart21 as we are the Smart City team who implements the Smart City Program, completes the application and have been awarded the prestigious Smart21 award for 3 years running. More information can be found at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/smartcities. Jacqui Gray, Smart Centre Officer Sunshine Coast Council - Tel: 0437505180 |

Rotary Youth Exchange student Jess Keenan
Jan 16, 2018
Join us for the first of our regular meetings in 2018 on Tuesday 16 January.
We have been in recess, so it will be a slow start to what promises to be a great second-half in our President Peter's year. Some have been fishing, surfing, cruising, walking, celebrating and perhaps even recuperating. You never know what we will discover as we commence another year of service and fellowship.
As a special treat, Julianna's daughter Jess will be joining us together with her French tutor. On 19 January, Jess is heading to France on a year-long Rotary Youth Exchange. So come along on Tuesday to hear Jess tell us all about the exchange and what she is looking forward to.

Visiting other clubs - so no meeting at The Oaks
Jan 23, 2018
Our meeting which normally would have been on Tuesday 23 January has been given wheels enabling all of us to be mobile!
The suggestion is that - rather than turn up at Oaks (where there will be nobody!) - groups of three to four of our members visit other Rotary clubs in our vicinity, take notes (things we would benefit from or should avoid) and report back to our meeting on 30 January.
Your choice of Rotary clubs and member groupings is attached or proceed to this page.

For more than 110 years, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world.
Grassroots at the core, Rotary links 1.2 million members to form an organization of international scope. It started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.
Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members.

The Yowie
Feb 27, 2018
PP Anna has vouched for John. This will be a very different talk. What do you currently know about the Yowie? Nothing I reply. Well come along and get informed. The yowie is Australia’s very own Bigfoot. They are reputed to live in the wilderness and witnesses claim to have seen them in all states and territories on the Australian mainland. Ipswich, west of Brisbane, is right now considered a yowie hotspot among researchers. Yowies go by a few names in various regions — puttikan, yahoo and tjangara among them — and tales of their existence have long featured in Aboriginal stories and oral histories. The first so-called interaction between a yowie and a white man was thought to be in 1882, involving amateur naturalist Henry James McCooey somewhere between Ulladulla and Bateman’s Bay on the NSW coast. But you’re more likely to encounter a yowie in the form of the chocolate bar that shares its name. Yowies, like the Abominable Snowman, are overwhelmingly considered the stuff of legend, perhaps even an endearing part of Australian folklore. Alleged sightings have been deemed misidentification or pure hoax.

Equine Therapy
Apr 03, 2018
Horses are sentient beings that have a connection with people that goes back through the centuries. They are non-judgemental and have no expectations or hidden agendas. A horse operates in the here and now and responds immediately and honestly to what is happening in its environment, and is expert in reading non-verbal signals and body-language.
It is these qualities that make them so valuable in the therapy programme. Unlike other animals, they mirror human emotions, intent and body language, expose incongruencies that may arise, and provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning.
Helen Sorensen, Owner of Equine Alliance will be presenting to us on Tuesday 3 April. Come and learn more about Equine Therapy from Helen.

Hope you can come to our next camping safari. Due to our normal venue for Breakfast being under repair for our Meeting next week, the venue has been changed to the Pelican Waters Golf Club. Please indicate for catering purposes, if you are able to attend. Yours In Rotary Peter Davis

The first Australian firm to receive a licence to grow and produce legal canabis
Apr 10, 2018
Medifarm is the first Australian company to be licensed to cultivate and manufacture medicinal marijuana. Medifarm has an exclusive international intellectual property partnership with Israeli based company, Tikun Olam, which pioneered world production 12 years ago. Medifarm set the Australian standard in cultivation and manufacture of medical cannabis supported by evidence based clinical research.
Tikun Olam has provided the mother stock for Medifarm's medicinal marijuana plants. In February, Medifarm was "hoping to have local production out the farm gate within the next three to four months" from a secure facility in a secret location on the Sunshine Coast.
Adam Benjamin will be our Guest Speaker on Tuesday, 10 April.
