Rotary Youth Exchange student Jess Keenan
Jan 16, 2018
Join us for the first of our regular meetings in 2018 on Tuesday 16 January.
We have been in recess, so it will be a slow start to what promises to be a great second-half in our President Peter's year. Some have been fishing, surfing, cruising, walking, celebrating and perhaps even recuperating. You never know what we will discover as we commence another year of service and fellowship.
As a special treat, Julianna's daughter Jess will be joining us together with her French tutor. On 19 January, Jess is heading to France on a year-long Rotary Youth Exchange. So come along on Tuesday to hear Jess tell us all about the exchange and what she is looking forward to.

Visiting other clubs - so no meeting at The Oaks
Jan 23, 2018
Our meeting which normally would have been on Tuesday 23 January has been given wheels enabling all of us to be mobile!
The suggestion is that - rather than turn up at Oaks (where there will be nobody!) - groups of three to four of our members visit other Rotary clubs in our vicinity, take notes (things we would benefit from or should avoid) and report back to our meeting on 30 January.
Your choice of Rotary clubs and member groupings is attached or proceed to this page.

Feb 23, 2018
For more than 110 years, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world.
Grassroots at the core, Rotary links 1.2 million members to form an organization of international scope. It started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.
Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members.

The Yowie
Feb 27, 2018
PP Anna has vouched for John. This will be a very different talk. What do you currently know about the Yowie? Nothing I reply. Well come along and get informed. The yowie is Australia’s very own Bigfoot. They are reputed to live in the wilderness and witnesses claim to have seen them in all states and territories on the Australian mainland. Ipswich, west of Brisbane, is right now considered a yowie hotspot among researchers. Yowies go by a few names in various regions — puttikan, yahoo and tjangara among them — and tales of their existence have long featured in Aboriginal stories and oral histories. The first so-called interaction between a yowie and a white man was thought to be in 1882, involving amateur naturalist Henry James McCooey somewhere between Ulladulla and Bateman’s Bay on the NSW coast. But you’re more likely to encounter a yowie in the form of the chocolate bar that shares its name. Yowies, like the Abominable Snowman, are overwhelmingly considered the stuff of legend, perhaps even an endearing part of Australian folklore. Alleged sightings have been deemed misidentification or pure hoax.

Equine Therapy
Apr 03, 2018
Horses are sentient beings that have a connection with people that goes back through the centuries. They are non-judgemental and have no expectations or hidden agendas. A horse operates in the here and now and responds immediately and honestly to what is happening in its environment, and is expert in reading non-verbal signals and body-language.
It is these qualities that make them so valuable in the therapy programme. Unlike other animals, they mirror human emotions, intent and body language, expose incongruencies that may arise, and provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning.
Helen Sorensen, Owner of Equine Alliance will be presenting to us on Tuesday 3 April. Come and learn more about Equine Therapy from Helen.

Gifted Kids Book Series
Jun 05, 2018
Giftedness is 24/7. It cannot be turned off. It can’t happen only between 9am-11am on Tuesdays. What if you were gifted and there was nobody like you? Would you want to stand out like a bright star against a velvety night sky? Or would you choose to hide by camouflaging your abilities? Gloria van Donge has written a series of books about a family of five gifted cheetah cubs is designed to provide a few snapshots of the world of the gifted and talented child. While written and illustrated on a child’s level, they also help adults become aware of some of the issues a gifted child could face. |
