Rae Guyder is a member of the Rotary Club of Bribie Island and is the Rotary District 9600 Chair for Interplast. Interplast sends teams of volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals to provide life-changing surgery and medical training in 17 countries across the Asia Pacific region. Interplast does this in partnership with local organisations, including hospitals, universities and local NGOs. Its mission is to ‘repair bodies and rebuild lives’ and Interplast does this through providing surgical services to those who could not otherwise afford or access these, and by building the capacity of local medical systems through our training and mentoring programs. Interplast is a fully accredited NGO with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), registered by the Australian Charities and Not For Profit Commission and is a signatory to the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) Code of Conduct. |

Grassroots at the core, Rotary links 1.2 million members to form an organization of international scope. It started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.
Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members.

PP Anna has vouched for John. This will be a very different talk. What do you currently know about the Yowie? Nothing I reply. Well come along and get informed. The yowie is Australia’s very own Bigfoot. They are reputed to live in the wilderness and witnesses claim to have seen them in all states and territories on the Australian mainland. Ipswich, west of Brisbane, is right now considered a yowie hotspot among researchers. Yowies go by a few names in various regions — puttikan, yahoo and tjangara among them — and tales of their existence have long featured in Aboriginal stories and oral histories. The first so-called interaction between a yowie and a white man was thought to be in 1882, involving amateur naturalist Henry James McCooey somewhere between Ulladulla and Bateman’s Bay on the NSW coast. But you’re more likely to encounter a yowie in the form of the chocolate bar that shares its name. Yowies, like the Abominable Snowman, are overwhelmingly considered the stuff of legend, perhaps even an endearing part of Australian folklore. Alleged sightings have been deemed misidentification or pure hoax.

The time of year has come around again where I seek your clubs support for the ROMAC Trivia Challenge, being held on Thursday 1st March 2018 at Unity College. This year is especially special due to it being the 30th anniversary of ROMAC.
Please place the name of the Rotary Club in the left column at the top under the heading Club/Team. It would be a great help if you can confirm your tables and send a copy of your entry forms by Friday 16th February. Donations in Kind is a fabulous program by which Rotary receives hospital and school equipment, books and much more that is being upgraded within our schools and hospitals and then sends them by container to our near neighbours in PNG, the Solomons and other Pacific Islands Our Rotary District cluster has been rostered to assist on 3 March and lour club is asked to provide at least three volunteers for the day. Prior to Vicky working in the community sector, she worked for Queensland Government in a range of roles across Child Safety, Youth Justice, Housing and Disability Services. The Queensland Air Museum is a not-for-profit community owned aviation museum located at Caloundra Airport. Its mission is to collect and preserve all aspects of aviation heritage with an emphasis on Australia and Queensland. The museum has the largest collection of historical aircraft in Queensland and it also has a large collection of aircraft engines, equipment, artifacts, photographs and books. Geoff Smith is the Marketing and Promotions Manager of the Queensland Air Museum and has been for the last four years. He is retired, living in Pelican Waters/Golden Beach for the past 18 years after a career in finance. He has previously been involved with both Rotary and Lions. Geoff is married to Patsy and has two children and three grandchildren. His interests are travel, badminton and, of course, QAM. |

Horses are sentient beings that have a connection with people that goes back through the centuries. They are non-judgemental and have no expectations or hidden agendas. A horse operates in the here and now and responds immediately and honestly to what is happening in its environment, and is expert in reading non-verbal signals and body-language.
It is these qualities that make them so valuable in the therapy programme. Unlike other animals, they mirror human emotions, intent and body language, expose incongruencies that may arise, and provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning.

The first Australian firm to receive a licence to grow and produce legal canabis

Medifarm is the first Australian company to be licensed to cultivate and manufacture medicinal marijuana. Medifarm has an exclusive international intellectual property partnership with Israeli based company, Tikun Olam, which pioneered world production 12 years ago. Medifarm set the Australian standard in cultivation and manufacture of medical cannabis supported by evidence based clinical research.
Tikun Olam has provided the mother stock for Medifarm's medicinal marijuana plants. In February, Medifarm was "hoping to have local production out the farm gate within the next three to four months" from a secure facility in a secret location on the Sunshine Coast.

The Mental Illness Fellowship - MIFQ - has been committed to providing a personalised response to the needs of people living with mental illness since 1985. It provides recovery-orientated support that promotes personal growth.
MIFQ promotes the belief that recovery and meaningful outcomes are possible for everyone. It believes that recovery is an individual process and that MIFQ's role is to provide people with opportunities, information and resources that will assist them to live the life of their choice in their community.
MIFQ can walk alongside people during their time with us and create an environment that supports the development of their skills so that they can grow to become fuller and richer people.
Melissa Bragg is the Fundraising Manager for MIFQ and she will be presenting to us on Tuesday morning 15 May. She is also the Direct Marketing Manager of QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. Prior to MIFQ, Melissa was acting Group Manager, Fundraising & Development for UnitingCare Health in 2015-16.

The challenges and rewards of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Dr John Arvier is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with a special interest in maxillofacial trauma. He has more than 28 years experience in specialist oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, with a private practice at the Wesley with branches in the suburbs as well as in Mackay and Rockhampton. Dr Arvier is also a Visiting Medical Officer at Ipswich Hospital and a consultant member of the Queensland Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training program. He completed his dental undergraduate training at the University of Queensland, with subsequent post-graduate surgical training at King’s College Hospital in London, and Royal Adelaide Hospital & Adelaide University. He is a former chairman of the Overseas Aid Committee of ANZAOMS, the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and has made 30 separate visits to Bangladesh, Cambodia and New Guinea, where ANZAOMS has established formal training programs in his specialty. Dr Arvier has treated many patients brought to The Wesley Hospital for surgical procedures not available in their home countries. Dr Arvier has achieved a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (Qld), Master of Science (Oral Surgery) (London), and MDS (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) (Adel), and is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International (FADI), and the International College of Dentists (FICD). He was awarded an OAM for services to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2006. |

Caloundra Film Festival

Murray started the Caloundra Film Festival in 2013. With the support of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Screen Queensland and other partners it has grown significantly. It runs over multiple locations over a 10 day period and includes a Features Programme, a Pop-up Cinema, a Student Showcase and this year a large open air opening night screening. |

Darryl Iseppi will be District Governor for the 2019-20 Rotary year. He will be joining us on 3 July as District Governor Elect. Currently he is District Rotary Foundation Chair for 2016-19 overseeing fundraising and grant activities for The Foundation in our District. An important ;part of that role is educating clubs and club members on the importance of supporting Our Foundation and how it works. Darryl is a member of the Rotary Club of New Farm. He was born in Toowoomba in 1963. Growing up on his parent’s farm on the Darling Downs between Bowenville and Jondaryan he experienced a variety of farming and the vagaries of Farm Life. Having attended Bowenville State School, then Dalby State High School travelling almost 3 hours every day for school, he moved to the big smoke of Brisbane to study Medicine living in Union College at St Lucia. Changing studies in 1982 he completed his Bachelor of Commerce whilst working full time for Arthur Andersen & Co. This work saw him travel across Australia and to Goroka and Mount Hagan in PNG. He also became a Registered Internal Auditor, Chartered Accountant, Registered Company Auditor, Quality Control Auditor, Registered Trainer, Registered Tax Agent, his employer’s leading fraud investigator, and Superannuation Specialist. He was also the first to bring computer aided auditing to his employer. VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED FOR: QUEENSLAND AIR MUSEUM - OPEN COCKPIT WEEKEND July 7 & 8 The Queensland Air Museum welcomes as many of our members as possiblke for the Open Cockpit Weekend. Possibly the best role would be to pair with a QAM volunteer manning an aircraft with an open cockpit for the day. We open from 9am to 4pm each day, but in reality need people from 9am to about 2.30 when the pace slackens. Volunteers on the day are supplied with a morning tea and lunch (both excellent) and car parking is available to volunteers in the Air Cadets yard next to us. If you are able to assist, kindly register for the Saturday and/or the Sunday.. QAM needs people to work the full day. QAM is happy to provide a Free Family pass for the family of each volunteer so they can enjoy the event as well.

There is a lot happening on Saturday 7 July - the Open Cockpit Weekend volunteering, this tree planting, and our Changeover in the eveneing. HOWEVER, if you can spare some time especially between 10 & 12, Council's planting activity on Sugar Bay Road would be a very worthwhile activity for you (if not otherwise engaged). The planting activity will be on Saturday July 7 in the Sugar Bag Road Bushland Reserve carpark, Caloundra. The carpark is on the left hand side of Sugar Bag Road just after Alexander Street if you’re heading west. The local mountain bike club is attending the activity and will have a ride in the morning at the reserve and then start planting at about 9:30 – 10am. We’ll plant until midday and then have some refreshments. So, if your Rotary Club members would like to join the planting from 10am to midday or part thereof you are most welcome |

Mamma Mia - Here we go again!
Sunshine Coast Rotaract are hosting a fundraiser night on the 22 July supporting it's International Project in partnership with Rotaract Silay. The Spark up Dreams, Light up Homes Project aims to provide solar LED lamps to kids living in rural areas of the Philippines.
Mamma Mia - Here we go again, the long awaited sequel is a fun movie loaded with all of your favourite ABBA songs. Come along to find out how it all began while singing along to your favourite tunes.
Tickets are $25.00 per person and include a welcome drink and nibbles.

Wendy Protheroe is the Governor of Rotary District 9600 for 2018-19. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Brisbane High Rise. Wendy began her career as a special education teacher where she developed her belief that everyone should be given the chance to enjoy their abilities. Then as Director of Early intervention Services she worked with terminally ill children and their families and learnt the importance of being flexible in understanding differences and keeping end goals in mind. As her children reached adolescence Wendy extended her career and spent seven years as TAFE Director at Gympie/Sunshine Coast and then Ipswich before being transferred to the Government’s Economic Development Portfolio. During that role she became the Queensland Director for the 2000 Olympic Games where she honed skills of working with high profile business, sports people and politicians, making focussed decisions and working to deadlines. Back in Brisbane ... The Role of the District GovernorDistrict governors provide leadership, motivation, and guidance to Rotary clubs under the general supervision of the RI Board of Directors. Governors act as officers of RI, fostering achievement in their district at the club level. Districts nominate governors 24-36 months before the governors take office. Governors-nominee are elected at the RI Convention and serve as governors-elect for 12 months prior to taking office. ResponsibilitiesDuring their term of service, governors:
Visiting clubsEach year, governors visit every Rotary club in the district to draw attention to important Rotary issues and provide special attention to weak or struggling clubs. The purpose of these visits is also to motivate Rotarians to participate in service activities and to personally recognize the outstanding contributions of Rotarians in the district. Visits may be conducted individually or with several clubs at the same time.

Our meeting on Tuesday 31 July will be hosted off site by the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce at their office (Level 1, 74 Bulcock Street).
Normal times 6.30am for 7am start, finish 8am. We have planned a standup boxed cooked breakfast with fresh fruit salad, yoghurt and juice. The Chamber is providing complimentary tea and coffee.
Normal meeting costs will apply: full breakfast $20, no breakfast $5; funds raised may assist in reducing your second half-yearly dues.
Numbers are needed for catering - please RSVP to me 0418 151 221 or via ClubRunner with your preference –b/fast or no b/fast.
This is a great opportunity to see the value of our Chamber membership and to gain an understanding of what and how the Chamber assists business stability and growth in our community.
