President Peter's Musings
Our scheduled Birthday Celebration Meeting at Ben Bennett Park was forced to be a "rain check" because of the rain.

Fortunately, we are a flexible Club and were able to postpone the Park visit to next week and have the Club Forum meeting this week, instead.
Our illustrious AOM, Alan Still took us to D4250, Honduras.  After a little research, I discovered Honduras is one of the world's most dangerous countries not in a war zone.  A famous soccer player has been shot dead while walking the streets and most alarmingly, its crocodiles on farms are very hungry.  Let's hope the fences are strong.
We were fortunate to have in our midst, three esteemed guests, at our morning meeting.  One being a local man, Ray White, and the other, his English visitor, Hugo Pike.  The third, our District's Assistant Governor, Wendy Gilson.

Next Tuesday's Meeting is a Celebration

It's a (BELATED) celebration!

Thursday 12 October marked the Anniversary of the Charter of the Rotary Club of Caloundra when Ben Bennett was our Charter President.

The Club honoured Ben Bennett as part of it 50th anniversary celebrations in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of the commencement of Rotary International on 23 February 2005.  Where better to do so than at the park named after him?  Ben had a strong interest in flora & fauna and lobbied hard for the establishment of Ben Bennett Park.
The club’s project – in conjunction with Caloundra City Council – provided a BBQ picnic shelter, paving, and a sign which pays tribute to Ben Bennett at the entrance to the park on Queen Street, Caloundra.
So to mark our 63rd Anniversary, our breakfast meeting on Tuesday 24 October will be a BBQ at Ben Bennett Park from 6.30am.  (The previously scheduled date of 17 October was washed out!)

Let us know you're coming, or send your apologies at this link.

The Water-Survival Box
Hugo Pike is Director of Operations for 'The Water-Survival Box' an initiative of the Rotary Club of Chelwood Bridge (Rotary District 1200) England.  He visited us last Tuesday with local Golden Beach resident, Ray White.

The primary purpose of the Water Survival Box is to provide a means of purifying water for the benefit of families that survive natural or man-made disasters.

Clean water is essential to protect against water-borne disease.  In most natural disasters families homes have been destroyed and all their possessions lost.  This is why the box also contains a range of essential survival items including cooking pots, bowls/plates, mugs, and utensils; health and hygiene items; basic shelter and simple tools; etc.
The Water Survival Box is operated by a UK charity, Worldwaterworks Ltd.  In the 11 years since this project was started,  the charity has responded to 54 disasters in 28 different countries providing Water-Survival Boxes for more than 130,000 people.  Each box costs £150 (including air freight charges) and every £ goes to deliver the aid.   It is still a pure Rotary project with all the work done by volunteers!

More Winds of Change
This is the other article mentioned by President Peter - it presents the Key Elements to a Healthy, Growing Club as seen by Mark Huddletson, a past Membership Director for Rotary District 9520 who was instrumental in chartering the Rotary Club of Seaford, SA.

"This blog didn't start out as a blog; but a presentation. I get a number of requests to talk to clubs and at district training events about the process of chartering the Rotary Club of Seaford. In this environment of falling membership and closing clubs, getting a new club up and running is somewhat of a novelty! We chartered with 21 and less than a year later we have had a net increase of 7, so I am now in a position to comment on its healthy growth.

"I think it's worth noting that these five elements were not drafted up prior to starting the club by some think tank. They have been determined with a retrospective view of what has been important and successful over the last year or so. Some of these things I had known all along would work, but some discoveries have been somewhat serendipitous. These are ranked in order of importance, and whilst they HAVE been extremely successful at Seaford, I believe they can be employed at ANY club."

Other thought-provoking articles can be read here, this particular contribution 'Who's for an Omelette?' is thought provoking.

Have you volunteered to sell Trifecta tickets/?
There are plenty of slots available for you to volunteer to sell our Trifecta tickets for the Melbourne Cup.

Check the roster here then click here to register - don't forget to nominate your preferred day/s & time/s.

Everyone likes a flutter on the MELBOURNE CUP and with each ticket having a set of three unique 'boxed' numbers, every ticket holder has something to cheer for on the big day.  Only ONE winning combination per set

THEY ARE EASY TO SELL - You do not have to write out names and addresses and phone numbers - just collect $2 coins and hand over a ticket.  Makes selling very simple.  Allows multiple sales.  Most members can sell 50 or more tickets very quickly.  Sell early - We can get more sets in need

It is up to the winner to call us.  If the winner does not come forward then the club stands to make an additional profit.  The winner MUST come forward within 90 days to collect.

Why do we do this?  There is a page on our website that explains it, so read it now.

Sponsorship Opportunities - District Conference
District Conference is just over six months away and much of the detail for 20-22 April 2018 has been finalised.

Sponsorship Opportunities are being offered to the members of the District before going to a wider audience.  This way we can prevent any clash of rival businesses in sponsorship.

This opportunity for our District’s members to promote their business before looking elsewhere will remain open until 31 October after which we will open sponsorship opportunities to a wider audience.

There are a number of tailored packages available ranging from $750 to $11000 inc GST.

Please contact Darryl Iseppi, District Conference Chair 2018 if you are interested in more details.
