Our meeting is NOT at the Oaks Resort

Our meeting this Tuesday is at the Caloundra Smart Centre, 63 Bulcock Street, Caloundra.
Our meeting will return to the Oaks Oasis Resort on Tuesday 5 December.

Next Tuesday's Meeting

Council is currently implementing a Smart City Program across the region which looks at ways we might be able to use technology to deliver services more efficiently and effectively. It also includes the plans for the technology for the new Maroochydore City Centre.

Our breakfast meeting will be in the Smart Centre learning all about the technologies that have been and are being installed in Caloundra as part of the Smart City Program followed by a Q&A session.  Jacqui Gray will present the Smart Centre to us.

As Caloundra is Council's testing lab for new technologies it has more tech installed currently than any other area of the coast. This visit follows on nicely from Mel Massina's talk about Smart21 as we are the Smart City team who implements the Smart City Program, completes the application and have been awarded the prestigious Smart21 award for 3 years running.  It is also a great way to provide ideas and comments about Council's activity in this space.

President Peter's Musings
'What does Rotary mean to you?' is the subject of Peter's musings today.

"So, what is Rotary?" is an oft heard question of a Rotarians.

Peter provides hints on how best to learn more about Rotary and to use that information to talk to prospective members.

The benefits of membership and the unique 'selling' points relating to our club are two other headlines he addresses.

Read on to benefit from our President's Musings.

Last week's Meeting
Darryl was in the chair last Tuesday morning.  He was barefoot for most of the meeting, complaining that his 'new' thongs made his feet sore.  Yes one outing at the Melbourne Cup lunch is not enough to wear them in, just as one outing in a jalopy is not enough to run a car in.  Perhaps next time the Speight's sandals will be in order!  Our Guest Speaker, Simon Latchford certainly provided a contrast in suit and best black shoes!

Support The Rotary Foundation on Giving Tuesday
Giving Tuesday is a global movement for charities and individuals to come together for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving.

On 28 November, join the community of donors that support Rotarian projects around the world by making an online gift to The Rotary Foundation.

Online giving is a fast, secure way to help families and communities that need it most — no wrapping paper required!
ShelterBox eNews
As world news continues to be dominated by the Rohingya Crisis in Bangladesh and Myanmar, I'm proud to say that newly qualified Australian ShelterBox Response Team Volunteer, Tommy Gray has deployed to help continue our response. Tommy typifies our volunteers, having already given up 2 weeks of his time to SRT selection and training, completed 50+ hours of pre-course study and put his hand up to help out with our recent USOPs course (see details below). He will now spend the next 3 weeks in Bangladesh helping some of the most vulnerable people in the world. Many of our other volunteers have been busy promoting ShelterBox and raising much-needed funds for disaster relief. These volunteers, like our donors, are an essential part of the ShelterBox team.

If you would like to give some time to helping those affected by disaster, check out our website.  You may like to become an Ambassador, a Club Advocate or trek the Annapurna and raise funds. Whatever you chose, we'd love to have you on the team!

This month's quote comes from H Jackson Brown Jnr, “Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.”

Head's up

What's ahead

  • Rotary Youth Exchange Students welcome at Happy Valley - RSVP here please
  • The club Christmas Party is being held at Ann & Merv's home on Saturday 16 December - again, an RSVP is important at this link
  • Our last regular meeting for 2017 is on 19 December - stay tuned for Santa's plans
  • The first meeting in 2018 will be on Tuesday 16 January - it is billed as a slow start as most of us will still be in  recovery mode
  • The meeting on 23 January is being transformed into a 'mobile meeting' whereby two or three of us will be requested to visit each of the other Rotary clubs in our cluster or vicinity.  A roster might be a good idea to ensure we limit numbers!
  • On 30 January, we will receive reports from the visits to other clubs
