The New Rotary Year
The New Rotary Year
Chris says a good description of the President's role is:
‘The President is the leader and director of traffic as the club decides its future and the President has to round them up and keep the focus on the key issues. It is important that the President is not the focal point for all activities.’
That sums it up pretty well especially the last point. I like to work as part of a team engaging members in our activities so that people feel they have a part to play in the club development and projects.

Better still, come along on Tuesday morning to listen, learn and participate.

Meet our President for 2019-20
Born in Hayes, Middlesex an industrial town to the west of London in 1951, Chris was relocated to Cheltenham in Gloucestershire as a six-year old when the family moved to accommodate his father’s job.  Engineering being in the family, it was only natural that at 16 he started work as a Mechanical Engineering apprentice gaining experience manufacturing parts for Commercial Aircraft Undercarriages and fuel system components for the RAF Harrier jump jet.

Further career advances led Chris to design heat exchangers and later roller bearings.  He also had spells as a Project Engineer at Ina Bearing Company’s plant in South Wales and later as Bearing Line Supervisor.  It was in South Wales that his passion for running took him to develop Llanelli Athletic club with a few work colleagues.

President's message
First of all, a big thank you to everyone who came along Saturday night to Caloundra Golf club for the Changeover. I hope you enjoyed the evening and fellowship, I have already earmarked a new joke book for Trevor but he really did a great job, you never really knew what was going to happen next! Thank you Trevor.

Many thanks also to Deb for organising the event and those who turned up to help set up.

Helen Smith’s talk on the work Compass do locally to help disabled people train for work, and try and bring some form of recognition to their lives, was inspiring.

The Assistance dogs initiative she mentioned is also a wonderful scheme, especially to reduce anxiety in autistic youngsters, it gives them a focus in life. The cost to train such a dog is prohibitive to many families and financial support is often needed – we should consider carefully what support we can offer Compass generally for the initiatives they are involved in.

We have an open invitation from Helen to visit their farm at Palmwoods and I hope we can get as many members out as possible in support of this visit, I am sure we will find this very interesting.

I can’t carry on this message without acknowledging the good work Bernie did during her time as President. As I said at the Changeover she had a tough year but was an example to all of us – her commitment to the members and causes was admirable. As my Vice President for this year, I hope not to call on her too often, as I am sure she deserves a break from the workload.

It’s my turn now so what are my plans.

Congratulations
Congratulations Sue Robinson on being recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow at Changeover for her outstanding service to the Rotary Club of Caloundra and to the community in the three years she has been a member.

A Paul Harris Fellow is an individual who contributes US$1,000 or more to The Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund or other approved programs, or a person who has had that amount contributed in their name.  Learn more about What is a Paul Harris Fellow

Paul Harris Fellow recognition is both an award for exemplary work in community service or helping those in need, or a method of recognising a substantial donation to The Rotary Foundation.
Caloundra Community Bank recognised
Caloundra Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank was also recognised at changeover for its continued service to the Caloundra community and the Rotary Club of Caloundra in the 11 years since it’s inception.

Amanda Zinn, who is a member of the Community Bank's Board of Directors, was presented on behalf of the bank with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Since Paul Harris Fellow recognition can only be presented to individuals, a Certificate of Appreciation is given instead to a business or organisation recognising a contribution of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation.

RI President's July message
Rotary allows us to connect with one another, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences. It connects us with people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us with our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.
