Jim delivered the President’s Report:
  • Melbourne Cup – 300 tickets on sold, but did fairly well – nobody has claimed a price yet.
  • Board yesterday
  • Centaur – “size” of project - in communication with Jason & Andrew -$50,000 required to upgrade the memorial, but may be “an event“ – Navy, US Navy, US Consulate, Schools may be interested - Roger notes there is a plaque up at the lighthouses commemorating the US forces stationed here during World War II - 268 crosses for the centaur victims.
  • Breakfast there on 24 January
  • Deborah – marketing plan – RSL - Grants – 25th anniversary of the Rotary Monument, and of course 80 years since the ship was lost
  • Genta suggested that the RC Komaki may want to be involved - talk to Japanese Commissioner – No one knows history – sensitive maybe – Deb noted the RSL were receptive
  • Duck Holes Creek – Council is helping – 100 trees
  • Dave – Treasurer’s Report - Accounts are “healthy actually“ - There was $3630 profit from the Melbourne Cup
  • Christmas at Sue’s – $20 per person – food prepared at Sue’s – 3rd of December

Deb mentioned the high quality of the winners – Kirsty is from North Lakes
 
From her Bio
“After completing her Bachelor of Communication (Honours) last year, Kirsty O’Callaghan commenced her PhD studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Her research focuses on ‘The role of gender in effective climate change communication’. Kirsty has also supported the ‘Real Rural’ research projects over the past three years in the position of social media manager and research assistant and participates in numerous USC Student as Partners program opportunities. Before embarking on her degree and subsequent PhD research, Kirsty had two decades of corporate and business experience and continues to be active in her consulting business and several voluntary and pro bono roles.”
 
Still reeling from a Covid shot, Kirsty acknowledged the Traditional Owners
She thanked the club for supporting the Bursaries – sacrifices when studying are big including financially.
 
She has a corporate background in banks, child care

At USC– degree in communication  - back doing PR, strategy and research including on Greta Thunberg – She is a PhD researcher
