One small positive thought in the morning will change your whole day

Roger (who apparently needs no introduction) was the guest speaker - talking about climate change
Roger is not a scientist, but feels the basic facts about climate change are no longer in dispute
Roger had to consult one of his 1970's university textbooks to explain how a greenhouse works, and then described how the greenhouse gasses acted in the atmosphere like the glass in the greenhouse.

He then put it into a much bigger context - the 4.5 billion year history of the planet.  See the slides here.  Of course, the really interesting stuff happens right at the end of each slide
If the life of the planet was compressed into 24 hours, the timeline of modern human history stretches for about five milliseconds
In that time, we have burnt a considerable amount of the fossil fuels which have been sequestered since the since the planet cooled down enough to support early life. We did not heed the early warnings, and now face an uncertain future

Predictions vary considerably, with NASA, for instance, suggesting between 300mm  and 2.4m sea level rise by 2100
The Australian scientists saw temperature rising anywhere between another half and 5 deg C, but some estimates were higher
That's just the next 80 years

Bangladesh has 100m people less than 2m above sea level, and we are seeing what one degree of warming looks like
There will be serious challenges facing the world as the century unfolds

There were a few questions and comments, all which contributed to our understanding of the issues

Roger was thanked for the presentation
