The three amigos
The Salvation Army is launching the Red Shield Appeal on Wednesday May 7th with their annual breakfast at the Caloundra Power Boat Club. Shadforth are major sponsors. The Salvation Army has set a fundraising goal of $50K this year and they are hoping for 200 people to attend the breakfast. We will be organising a table for Rotary members.
James expressed his gratitude to Roger for his years of dedication to the weekly bulletin, The Reel.
The floor was opened to members to discuss the Club’s future fundraising efforts.
- Gympie Music Muster - 27th to 31st August – not a huge money maker but can contribute by assisting with Wheelie bin management. It will be a way to lend a helping hand all the while enjoying the music experience and free camping. Email Tracey if you can attend over those dates.
- The Big Dig – date TBC but Australia Day or other school holidays were suggested. Use our connection to business to ask for sponsorship and prizes. This fundraiser has the potential to raise around $60K. The Big Dig will be a family event and we are looking to hold it at Bullcock Beach. Stay tuned for more information.
- Kings Beach Carols are happening again – Saturday 13th December. Lisa from the Chambers of Commerce is organising. James is touching base with Lisa to check if Rotary can have a BBQ/food stand and a Glow sticks/products stand. The carols run from 4pm to 8pm with intermission being from 6-6.30pm. Sally has volunteered to collaborate with James to get this organised.
- Trifecta tickets – easy to organise but not to sell.
- Golf Day – participants know it’s a fundraiser up front. May do this another year
- Car boot/garage sale – Car boot gets more people involved and it’s a more social event. If we are going to hold these they need to be a regular occurrence. Garage sale easy to organise but has the potential to be left with people’s unwanted/unsellable items.
- Movie night – Bernie is still investigating
- It was unanimously agreed that any fundraiser should clearly advertise the donation recipient, preferably a local organisation to strengthen our community presence. Additionally, there should be publicity highlighting who the club is supporting.

Richard informed us that the effects of cyclone Alfred have uncovered a First Nations midden at the northern tip of Bribie Island. A 'midden' is a site where Aboriginal people left meal remnants, marking an area of past occupation. In some locations, these deposits accumulated over generations, forming substantial layers, sometimes several meters deep. For certain Aboriginal nations, middens hold sacred significance.
Darryl suggested that the club reinstate Grandparents Day as a way to introduce young people to Rotary.
In June Darryl and his family are travelling to the Philippines to visit Bohol and the Children’s home. If anyone else is interested in traveling Darryl is happy to show them around.
